On-call Daycare Janitor

Position Purpose: The Childcare Center Janitor is responsible for performing custodial duties and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that all buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner.

Pay Grid Range: $21.05 - $ 23.79 depending on experience
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The Childcare Centre Janitor is responsible for performing janitorial duties by the Aboriginal Head Start Manager. The Childcare Center Janitor shall follow all safety and security regulations along with policies and procedures for staff. While cleaning, no paperwork is to be looked at, read or displayed on anyone’s desk. This Childcare Centre Janitor is not permitted to allow anyone else in the building, including friends and family.
Cleaning and Disinfection:
• Use soap and water to remove visible dirt with clean water. Cleaning must be done prior to disinfecting.
• There are 3 steps to the cleaning process: wash, rinse and dry.
• Cleaning tools include multi-use gloves and/or disposable, laundered cloths, mops, brooms, bucket, vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner.
• Cleaning should take place when children are not present. Cleaning should be carried out starting from the least heavily soiled areas and from low touch to high touch area.
Sanitizing / Disinfecting:
Removing visible dirt and applying an additional sanitizer solution to reduce the number of germs likely to cause disease. The following procedures must be followed by Janitor:
• Children and teacher chairs will be sanitized and wiped down at the end of each day.
• All cleaning rags are to be laundered and washed on a warm to hot cycle with detergent and/or bleach.
• All hard floors are to be swept and mopped with sanitizing detergent each day and change water as needed.
• All Bathrooms cleaned and sanitized each day. This includes sinks, countertops, toilets (inside/outside of toilet and along outside edge of toilet from top of toilet to bottom) and floors.
• All inside windows with glass cleaner daily, window ledges dusted.
• All outside windows to be done early Spring, Summer and Fall before it gets too cold outside.
• Carpets to be washed every 3 months or as needed.
• Interior/Exterior of garbage bins washed daily.
• High touch surfaces are those used frequently: doorknobs, doors, light switches, etc.
• All cubbies to be washed every Friday.
• Regular cleaning and sanitization will increase if there is a breakout of contagious infection and/or disease in the Childcare Centre.
• Check and fill toilet paper, tissue, paper towel, hand soap and garbage bags.
• Wash and dry all cleaning material such as rags, mop heads and put away.
• Disposable gloves are to be worn during cleaning: hands washed immediately after gloves are removed.
• Check supplies bi-weekly (give order for supplies to Manager)
• Clean offices, meeting chambers and areas.
• Mop all floor areas.
• Vacuum all carpeted areas.
• Dust all furniture and fixtures, computers as needed.
• Place garbage in outside storage bin.
• Clean entrance and exit including glass, doors and hardware.
• Keep outside area near exit and entrance clear snow, cans, paper, etc.
• Clean, wash and disinfect all sinks and counters.
• Keep janitorial room clean.
Requirements:
• Knowledge of standard methods, practice tools and equipment used to clean buildings and furniture.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules.
• knowledge of the proper use of chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides.
• Ability to follow directions and be a team player.
• Ability to safely operate and use janitorial tools, equipment and supplies such as carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaners and cleaning compounds and solutions.

Hours of Work:
The Childcare Centre Janitor hours of work are normally from Monday to Friday for 7 hours per day from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm shifts, with 1-hour unpaid lunch break, for up to 35 hours per week. The Childcare Centre Janitor hours of work may vary based on the need and as needed at the discretion of Nak’azdli Whut’en Aboriginal Head Start Manager.
Working Conditions:
• Physical ability to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods of time.
• Working with cleaning substances and sometime hazardous materials.
• Sometime working alone or with a co-worker with or without supervision.
