Purpose: Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the On-call/Casual Recreation Worker will support the recreational programming and activities for the Nak’azdli Whut’en First Nation Community in conjunction with the FSJ Youth Centre. This role is responsible for facilitating a variety of recreational and cultural activities that promote community engagement, physical fitness, and well-being. The Recreation Worker will work collaboratively with community members, youth, and families to create an inclusive and enjoyable environment that reflects the values and traditions of the Nak’azdli Whut’en First Nation.

Program Delivery:
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing recreational programs and activities for community members of all ages.
- Facilitate and lead recreational activities such as sports, arts and crafts, cultural workshops, and community events.
- Develop age-appropriate activities that cater to various skill levels and interests.
- Adapt and modify activities to accommodate diverse participant needs and abilities.
- Maintain a positive and engaging atmosphere during all activities, encouraging participant interaction and teamwork.
Community Engagement:
- Foster positive relationships with community members, families, and youth to encourage participation in recreational programs.
- Promote recreational activities through community outreach efforts, including social media, flyers, and word-of-mouth
- Collaborate with local schools and community organizations to enhance program visibility and participation.
- Organize community input sessions to gather feedback and suggestions for future programming.
- Actively seek out partnerships with local businesses and organizations to support community events.
Supervision and Safety:
- Monitor and supervise participants during recreational activities to ensure safety and adherence to guidelines.
- Provide first aid and emergency care as needed, ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
- Conduct regular safety checks of facilities and equipment before and during activities
- Implement and enforce safety protocols, ensuring participants understand and follow guidelines
- Maintain an incident report log for any accidents or safety concerns and notify the Recreation Coordinator.
- Organize community input sessions to gather feedback and suggestions for future programming.
- Actively seek out partnerships with local businesses and organizations to support community events.
Cultural Integrations:
- Incorporate local cultural practices, traditions, and values into recreational programming and activities.
- Collaborate with Elders and community leaders to ensure cultural relevance in programming.
- Organize cultural events and celebrations that highlight the history and traditions of Nak'azdli Whut'en.
- Encourage participants to share their own cultural practices through workshops and presentations.
Facility Management:
- Assist in the maintenance and organization of recreational facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Ensure that recreational spaces are clean, safe, and properly set up for activities.
- Help with the setup and teardown of equipment for events and programs.
- Conduct inventory checks of recreational supplies and report any shortages to the Recreation Coordinator.
- Ensure that all equipment is in safe working condition and report any faulty equipment.
Administrative Support:
- Maintain attendance records and participant information for programs.
- Assist with the preparation of reports and documentation related to recreational activities.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
- Help develop promotional materials to advertise upcoming programs and events.
- Track program participation and provide feedback on successes and areas for improvement.
Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in recreation, education, or a related field is an asset.
- Experience working with children, youth, and families in a recreational or community setting.
- Knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, and community dynamics is highly valued.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate participants.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
- Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
Working Conditions:
- Physical ability to participate in sports and exercise programs.
- Manual dexterity is required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

Hours of Work:
The Casual Recreation Worker will work a flexible work schedule for a total of 7 hours per day. The schedule will be adjusted to say within the 35 hours per week which constitutes a normal work week at Nak’azdli. It is expected that all work will be completed within your regular working hours, however you may occasionally be required to work weekends and evening to deliver programming. As a casual employee, there are no guarantees of hours or days for work.
