Medicine Gathering

A special Musi goes out to Nak’azdli Communications Summer Student Taylor Beauchemin Prince for the Medicine Gathering photos and information.

Each year the Nak’azdli Health Centre organizes medicine gathering trips. Gathering takes place on Thursday mornings between 9 am and 12 pm. Processing of the plants takes place from 2-3 pm on the same day.

The Health Centre provides transportation for anyone who wants to participate. It is best if people bring their own buckets or bins if they have them.

If you would like to participate in medicine gathering at the Health Centre, contact Nadine Button or Caroline Bird to sign up. Dates are posted on the Health Centre’s Facebook page.

To learn more about medicine gathering and use, be sure to talk with Medicine Woman Maggie Morris. She usually comes on these trips.

Balsam Fir

Bubbles of sap collect on the balsam fir tree bark. This sap can be collected and used with bear fat for medicine.

Balsam bark is used for many types of healing, including skin conditions like eczema. It can also be used as a decongestant. To collect the bark, cut a rectangular strip from the tree. Make sure it is small enough to allow the tree to heal its bark.

Boil the bark in a pot of water for several hours. The longer you boil it, the stronger it will be.
